In 2005, Jeff Kruger created a private detective business called Focal Point. He created his business out of his home in the Bay Area of California. Jeff used his many years of law enforcement experience to create a very successful business. In 2012, Jeff met the love of his life, Melissa O’Reilley. At the time, Melissa was serving her community as a deputy sheriff. Together, Melissa and Jeff traveled the world creating new memories. After Melissa and Jeff retired from law enforcement, they eventually settled in Spotsylvania Courthouse to raise their family.

Shortly after arriving in Spotsylvania, Melissa and Jeff felt the need to assist their community by combining their 20 years of law enforcement knowledge, and Melissa’s many years of dog training experience, to reopen Focal Point, but add a special component; dogs. Thus, the creation of Focal Point K9 Detection was born in 2024.

Both Jeff and Melissa served in the United States military prior to their law enforcement careers. Jeff enlisted in the Marines in 1984. In 1988, Jeff was commissioned as an officer. Jeff is a Desert Storm and Desert Shield veteran. Jeff was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1993.

With the help of her parents, Melissa enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17. In 1999, Melissa decided to become an aircrewman. Melissa was promptly sent overseas where she earned her Kosovo Campaign medal. Melissa is also a Global War on Terrorism veteran. Melissa was honorably discharged as an AD2(NAC) in 2006.

Focal Point K9 Detection is designed to help the community by detecting unwanted guests, such as termites, bed bugs and lanternflies. Our goal is to let the customer know if they have a problem. We want to be an early warning system for the community, before a problem gets out of control. Our K9s’ nose, knows.
